This week I are mostly been…

  • Shooting a story for Men’s Fitness with chief petty officer (and ex-SAS soldier) Colin Towell, a survival expert, author and teacher at the joint survival school. Myself and Nick from Men’s fitness spent a day with him in the New Forest being taught the basics of fire lighting, making shelter, finding water and so on. At about 6 in the evening, with about an hour and a half of daylight left we were told “right, there’s some gear to make shelters with, there’s the forest – off you go”. And off we jolly well went. It took about 90 minutes to get the shelters built, and cut wood for the fire, and then as darkness fell we sat around our little bonfire, eating our army rations and singing “ging gang gooly”. By about midnight it started raining, and I got up to re-tension all the ropes on my shelter – Nick did the same, but somehow got much wetter than I did in the process! I can’t say it was my best night’s sleep ever, but I was still warm and dry the next morning, which is a decent achievement in it’s own right!
  • Having an Easter egg hunt with some friends. I’ll be 32 in just over a month.
  • Running my first 10k in almost a year. Feel stiff today, but very satisfied.
  • Finishing “The Confusion” by Neal Stephenson, that’s 2 out of 3 in the “Cycle” done, I suspect I shall have to start the 3rd one soon, as it was pretty good stuff.
  • Lazing about a lot and enjoying the bank holiday!
